I'm using a non-English version of Windows and all my icon labels are showing as boxes. What do I do?

BumpTop does not currently detect your system language. Change your icon label font to a font that supports your language. Right click on your BumpTop tray icon, Settings, and jump over to the Themes tab. Under Font Overrides at the bottom, change the Icons font to one that will display your native language.

I've been using BumpTop for a while and now all my walls are gone! What happened?

You're probably in Infinite Desktop mode. Right click on your tray icon, go into Settings, and uncheck the "Infinite Desktop Mode" checkbox.

I've been using BumpTop for a while, and now it doesn't start up! How do I clear out my settings and start fresh?

BumpTop stores its settings in the user profile only - no settings are stored in the system registry. This is where the settings are stored:

  • Vista: \Users\(user)\AppData\Roaming\Bump Technologies, Inc\BumpTop
  • XP: \Users\(user)\Local Settings\Application Data\Bump Technologies, Inc\BumpTop

To clear your BumpTop scene, right click your tray icon, go to Settings, and click "Reset BumpTop Layout". You can also quit out of BumpTop and manually delete the Bump.scene and Bump.scene.bak in the above location. Keep in mind that clearing your BumpTop scene will NOT ERASE ANY OF YOUR DATA but will erase all your BumpTop-specific information such as icon, widget, sticky note, photoframe positions. Your photoframes will also need to be recreated.

To clear your BumpTop settings, close BumpTop and delete the settings.json file in the above location. BumpTop will lose all of its settings and will require you to reactivate.

BumpTop won't start and gives an error about an Unknown software exception (0xc0000409) which occured at location 0x006121e3 when I try to start it. What do I do?

While the exact error usually changes, this type of error is usually because the Visual C++ 2005 redistributables are not installed properly. Get the 32-bit package here or the 64-bit package here from Microsoft. Reboot after installation and try starting BumpTop again.

Will BumpTop work inside virtualization packages like Virtual PC, VMware, Parallels or VirtualBox?

BumpTop is not officially supported inside any virtualization environment at this time. BumpTop uses OpenGL to render its graphics and will not currently work inside Microsoft Hyper-V, Virtual PC, VMWare or VirtualBox. However, some users have reported limited success with Parallels.

After downloading BumpTop I get a message saying, This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package. How do I fix this?

Most likely, the BumpTop download was interrupted before it was complete. Clear your internet cache/temporary internet files, and then try downloading the installer again.

I can't install BumpTop. It gets stuck while Preparing to install or Please wait while Windows configures BumpTop

There is likely a problem with Windows Installer on your machine. Try to uninstall BumpTop, then reboot. Then download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from Microsoft and remove any entries related to BumpTop. Reboot again, and reattempt the installation.

Is there a Mac or Linux version of BumpTop available? Where do I download it?

Our Mac version has been released and is available here. Pro codes should work on both the Mac and Windows versions but will count as an additional activation. We do not currently have any announced plans for a Linux version, but we are constantly looking to expand our operating system support.

Does BumpTop support 64-bit Windows? What about Windows 7?

BumpTop runs on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of XP and Vista with the latest service pack installed. We have done very preliminary testing with Windows 7 in 32-bit and 64-bit flavours, but due to the beta/RC status, users may experience issues. We are very excited about multi-touch and are committed to supporting Windows 7. Current Windows 7 beta users will need to install Vista (WDDM 1.0) drivers as most Windows 7 WDDM 1.1 beta drivers do not provide the necessary OpenGL support.

Bump This Folder does not work or does not show up in my Explorer toolbar even when I enable it in the settings. How do I make it work?

Bump This Folder is currently a labs feature and is not enabled by default due to reliability problems we've seen. We'll be continuing to improve this feature in a future release.

You should see the option to enable the feature in the Settings application; once activated, you can activate the BumpTop toolbar in Explorer via the View--> Toolbar menu.

If you find that the checkbox unchecks itself when you exit Settings and go back in, you will have to attempt manual registration of the Explorer shell extension:

  1. Open an elevated command prompt (or open a cmd window as an administrator.)
  2. Go into the BumpTop folder in Program Files, using "cd \Program Files\BumpTop"
  3. If in 32-bit XP/Vista, do "regsvr32 BtShExt.dll" . If you're running x64, run the same command INSIDE the x64 folder in the BumpTop folder. You shouldn't receive any errors at this point.
  4. Log off and log back on.
  5. Try re-enabling the feature in Settings now.
  6. In Explorer, go into the View menu, Toolbars, and enable the BumpTop toolbar.
